Novation SL 49 MK III

The center piece of my setup.

Capable to control and play up to 8 midi hardware and/or software synths made this the number one midi controller for my home setup.

iConnectivity Mio XL

2 of these units in RTP setup ( Midi over ethernet ) are set up to handle my hardware synths

Roland TR-8S

All major Roland drum kits are united in this groove box machine. Only one regret with this is the lack of a song mode.

Motu 24 AI & Motu 828 es

These two analog audio interfaces are AVB linked together and give they’re combined power via Thunderbolt to my Mac mini M2 Pro for integration with Ableton Live for recording and playback.

In total they give me 32 analog inputs that can be routed to analog outputs of the 828 es and 24 ADAT channels via 3x8 AVB streams to my  Mackie SDR 24/96. Two analogue outputs are  routed via the Behringer Ultragraph Pro into my PA amplifier of 2x 500W Rms ( 2x 1000W peak). Two other analogue outputs are connected to my home stereo amplifier, yet another two outputs are connected to a huge led VU meter and another output is routed to my American DJ DMX controller for music based light effects.

Kali Audio IN-5

Last but not least i finally bought me a pair of studio monitors.

For my bedroom of 3x3,5 meters I did not wanted to go for 8” speakers, not only would they be way out of proportion but also much to big for this bedroom. After many reviews and following several channels on YT  i  chose for the Kali Audio IN-5 speakers.  For small rooms these are ideal AND 3-way.

They came in at about 324€ a piece so for under 650€ a pair this is a bargain. I’m using them now for 2 weeks and they sound magnificent. Thank you Kali for making such great products for such a price.

Behringer Deepmind 12D

This is my number one synth for Arp related instruments and sounds.

Although the stock presets makes you wonder at first why the heck you bought this, but creating or using pre-made 3th party presets will unleash the power of this beast instantly.

Novation Mininova

Originated from the same sound engine as the Ultranova, this smaller Mininova can uphold  his place among many more expensive synths.

This was my second synth that I bought early 2020. Before this one I had the pleasure of buying a second hand novation Circuit OG which has 2 synths and a small 4 track drum computer/groove box. Thanks to those 2 synth tracks I got a taste of the mininova sound because the circuits synth engine is also based on the mini/ultranova sound engine.

In this price range Both synths excel in having able to play 2 parts at the same time, or separate, 3 midi channels, part a, part b and part a+b. Not often seen in this price range.

The JD-08 has a 4 layer sound so in practice with part a+b you have 8 layers of sound combined into one.

Modal Electronics Cobalt 8M

Don’t let the small form factor fool you!

This synth is for me THE synth for creating Leads and pads. The arp function is greatly improved on firmware v2.0 and also a few new features on this update gives even more and better sound design as before.

Roland JD-08 and JX-08 are just two of the Roland Boutique series. These little sound modules/synthesizers recreate the “BIG” models like the Juno and other former Roland synthesizers. Recreating the analog sounds of these synths in a much less price range as the originals the Boutique series have their  value.

Roland Gaia 2

After looking at several reviews I came across the review of Scott's Synth Stuff.

As always, Scott is a very enthusiastic synthesizer player and therefore positively conveys the product to his audience.

To take full control of Ableton Live, the Akai APC 40 Mk II was for me the best option at hand for the price.

When the moment is come to just mix some tracks from my collection nothing can beats the Numark NVII. With 2 screens it’s a pleasure to scroll down into the libraries that I have collected over the years and just have some fun. I use this only at home for my own pleasure and for that goal it is perfect.

Mackie SDR 24/96

Found this beauty sitting around at a friends place still in original box. Production date 1990. The unit was in BRAND new condition when it came and came out of the box twice before I bought it. After a search for a new IDE hard drive (yes they are still available but not from Mackie itself) added the new drive into the system (plus the original one that still WORKS) this unit is still performing like new.

Connected to the Motu 24AI through ADAT

This gives me full control of inputs and outputs to record or playback  even without the use of a DAW.

In the next pages i will try to explain how i made my setup to work.

Understand that before I made a purchase i first spend days if not weeks watching and reading reviews about that specific instrument or other gear. Youtube and Google were my 2 number one companions in many, if not all, purchases that I made. Independent reviews are a rich and valuable research. Keep that in mind.
